Artwork-The Ultimate Accessory for your Home and Office Environment

So you have finished your renovation or construction and chosen the perfect furniture for your office or home, and you step back to admire the work.

Then it hits you! Something is missing. Artwork!

Everyone knows that art is the ultimate accessory, but what style do you use and where do you look to find that perfect piece? Well wonder no more. Here is a look at some of the styles of art and a few of my favorite Nashville artists that can WOW you with their talent without you having to take out a loan to afford their fabulous artwork.

Artists use many styles in their paintings and drawings. Here are some of the more common styles of art.

Abstract- This is a type of art where the art itself doesn’t have to make sense or be recognizable things that appear in the real world . People can look at abstract art and see various different things. It is generally not specific objects but rather shapes and color that give this artwork its magnificent flare and affect on emotions.

Famous abstract artists you may recognize are Sonia Delaunay and Jackson Pollack

Cubism- This is modern art made up mostly of paintings. The paintings generally use geometric shapes to express the nature of the artwork. This is not a realistic view of a particular thing or person but rather a view of the object or person by using shapes. In most cubism paintings you can recognize the object being portrayed even if it isn’t a true realistic view.

Famous cubism artists are Pablo Picasso and Marc Chagall.

Expressionism- In expressionism art, the artist is most interested in expressing a particular feeling or emotion through the painting. They may use bright colors to express happiness, or dark colors to express a sad mood. The texture and type of medium that is used can also provoke an emotional response. It is all about feeling and expressing ones emotions on a subject.

Famous expressionist artists include, Marc Chagall and Ludwig Kirchner.

Fauvism- Fauvism was a style that lasted only about 4 years starting in 1905. The movement was led by Henry Matisse. Subject matters where painted very simply but using bold and bright colors and contrasts in patterns. This style was named after the French word Fauvism meaning  ”Wild Beast”. This name was appropriate  because of the intense colors  and patterns used.

The most famous fauvism artist was the leader of the movement Henry Matisse.

Impressionism- Impressionism began in France in the late 19th century and early 20th century. These paintings look as though the artist only glanced at the subject he or she is painting. The paintings do not offer much detail. Generally, they are of outdoor scenes such as landscapes and buildings. Bold colors with a shimmering appearance make these paintings extremely intriguing to look at.

Famous impressionist artists you are sure to recognize are Claude Monet and Pierre Auguste Renoir. This is one of my favorite art styles.

Pointillism-This is an amazing style. The artist uses points and quick brush strokes that when seen from a distance create an image. The dots blend together to  make incredible colors that create detailed shadows and depth of picture.

Famous pointillism artist are Paul Seurat and Paul Signac.

Pop Art-Pop art is art that takes everyday items and paints them in a brash and colorful way. This art is inspired by advertising, comic strips and popular entertainment. It is short for “popular art”.

An example of a  famous pop artist would be Andy Warhol.

Post Impressionism- This style began in the 19th century. It consists of mainly still lifes and landscapes. The style is full of varying shades of colors and shadows.

The name Vincent Van Gogh sound familiar? He is the most famous post impressionist artist.

Primitivism-This style of art looks as though it is done by a child. It is very simple. The artwork is usually 2 dimensional and has a very flat appearance with little to no depth.

Henry Matisse and Paul Klee did many pieces of art in this style.

Realism- Realism is a type of art that shows things exactly as they appear in real life. It began in the 18th century and continued into the 19th century. Most realist were French but this was also popular among some American artists.

Some famous realism artists are Leonardo de Vinci, Henri de Toulouse  Lautrec and Daumier Thomas Eakins

Surrealism-Surrealistic art is made to look dreamlike. The artist uses familiar objects but in a different and mysterious way than you might normally expect. It is used to evoke emotion, while striving to enlighten its audience to a new or different way of looking at things.

Two famous surrealism artists are Salvador Dali and Henry Rousseau.

So now that you know a little bit about the different styles of art ,the next time you look at a piece of artwork think about the influence and style of the piece.
